Czech food was a fantastic surprise for all of us. We ate at several Czech restaurants in Prague and each meal was wonderful. Prague food was, at all times, delicious and everyone, including the kids, enjoyed their meals.

There was plenty for even our growing teen, the meals were really inexpensive and each restaurant in Prague was attentive with Sydney’s allergies. All of these restaurants were also within walking distance of Old Town Square and our amazing apartment in Prague. Bonus!

Our favourite Czech Restaurants in Prague

Kolkovna, Celnici 4, Prague

Kolkovna has several locations in Prague. We ate at the Celnici location which is near Namesti Republiky. It was our first introduction to Czech food and based on our experience there, we were going to eat very well! Of all the Czech restaurants in Prague, this was one of the ones we enjoyed the most.

The waiter was incredibly nice, patient and attentive to Sydney’s allergies. Each of us, except Sydney, made a point of ordering typical Prague food we had read about. Caiden ordered the Moravian Sparrow (which is actually pork), Lucas and John ordered the boar and I had the gulas with dumplings which was wonderful. Sydney didn’t really enjoy her Caesar salad. I expect part of it was jet lag and the other part was that it was not quite what she expected. Despite this, Kolkovna is absolutely one of our favourite Czech restaurants in Prague!

Krcma – Kostecna 925, Prague

Krcma is also one of our favourite Czech restaurants in Prague.  Krcma is a charming restaurant in the Prague’s Jewish Quarter. Descend four or five stairs upon entry and you’ll find yourself in what could be a medieval stone dining hall. The atmosphere is wonderful and the food is superb.

We stopped in for lunch before exploring the Jewish Quarter. Caiden and I enjoyed smažený sýr (deep fried cheese with tartar sauce), John had the pork knee (it was huge!), Lucas had the rib eye and Sydney had the pork schnitzel. Every bite was wonderful. Oh, and they make a mean cappuccino too!

Lucas actually returned to Prague with his school band after our family visit. He desperately wanted to take his band mates to Krcma so they could taste typical Prague food but unfortunately the day they were free to wander was the day Krcma was closed.

Lod Pivovar, Stefanikuv most, Kotviste cislo 19, Prague

image of white boat with Lod Pivovar a very cool Czech restaurant in Prague

Lod Pivovar  is actually a brewery boat that is moored beside a bridge on the Vltava River. They have two separate menus, both filled with incredible Prague food: one for the top of the boat which is more of a pub menu and one for the main level of the boat which is more of a dining menu. We had wanted to eat up top but moved to the main level based on the menu.

I had read that the duck here was incredible so we really wanted to try it. John and Sydney followed suit. Now, duck isn’t usually my thing but I have to say, this duck was absolutely delicious. It was served with dumplings as was Caiden’s gulas. Lucas had the steak and really enjoyed that as well. To find out more about our meals here and at the other Czech restaurants in Prague, check out the list of our favourite Czech foods. We would absolutely return here again.

Lokal, Dlouháa 33, Prague

image of outside sign for Lokal restaurant Prague

Lokal had been recommended prior to our trip and by three locals during our visit to Prague. Perhaps I had been expecting more.  The food was good and the prices were fantastic but we preferred our meals at Krcma and Kolkovna. Maybe it was the atmosphere. It was definitely a nice Czech restaurant in Prague but was incredibly crowded and busy whereas the other locations were more relaxing. I would still recommend Lokal as the quality for the price of the food was very good.

Lokal also does something very unique. Our guide Jason told us about it. While not on their written menu, if you look at the wall menu there is an item there you can order. It pays for a meal for someone less fortunate.

For each such meal purchased, a voucher goes to a local shelter and these vouchers are given to people in need. It allows them to go to any Lokal location and order a meal with a drink. The cost for us was 90czk or approximately $5CAD. You can find out more about it on our guide, Jason’s webpage.

I have only been to Prague once, so it’s on the list for a return visit. As San Diegans, we love our beer, AND finding breweries wherever we travel. Now we have a spot in Prague we have to check out. Thank you!
